Pointer Brochure here...

Each landmark is identified relative to 3 markers that are attached to the segment of interest. Computing the location relative to 3 markers means that the subject can move during the data capture. This can be especially useful because you can move the subject so that there is a better view of the markers for the motion capture system.

Digitizing Pointers

C-Motion, Inc. is now able to provide the means of creating Virtual Markers(landmarks) for use in creating 3D models. Dr. Roy Davis has developed and patented a spring-loaded system for identifying a location and event in 3D space. This technology has been licensed from Shriners Hospitals by C-Motion, who now manufactures the device.

Visual3D’s advanced modeling functionality now includes a digitizing pointer interface for creating Virtual calibration markers (special Visual3D landmarks). The interface supports passive and active marker setups with custom pointers and vendor provided pointers, but it has special automation and event recognition capabilities for the Davis Digitizing Pointer.

Standard pointer (60 cm) for full body and large volumes:

The objective for using the pointer is to identify anatomical points without having to place motion capture markers at the location. There are many reasons for using a pointer instead of a marker.

  • Some anatomical landmarks are obscured by fat(e.g. the Pelvis ASIS markers for overweight subjects
  • Some anatomical landmarks are obscured from the cameras (e.g. some medial landmarks)
  • Some anatomical landmarks are too close together (e.g. on the foot) and tracking the markers can be challenging
  • In order to attach markers, the subject may need to expose that part of the body, which can be uncomfortable for some subjects

Small pointer (25 cm) for detailed work with hands, feet, etc.:
