The pointer is used to identify anatomical points without having to place reflective motion capture markers at the location. It is use primarily for creating a virtual marker in a standing calibration trial, used in defining a biomechanical model.

The interface supports passive and active marker setups with custom pointers and vendor provided pointers, but it also has special automation and event recognition capabilities. Dr. Roy Davis has developed a spring-loaded system for identifying a location and event in 3D space. This technology was licensed from Shriners Hospitals by C-Motion, who now manufactures the device.

The C-Motion Pointer package, with 2 pointers – the 60cm spring-loaded
pointer, and a smaller 25cm pointer that is held like a pencil.

DIGITIZING POINTER (25cm) FOR SMALL VOLUMES:

THERE ARE MANY REASONS FOR USING POINTER INSTEAD OF A MARKER:

  • Some key anatomical landmarks are obscured from the cameras
(e.g. some medial landmarks or pelvis markers for overweight subjects).
  • Some anatomical landmarks are too close together (perhaps on the foot or hand)
    for tracking.
  • In order to attach markers, the subject may need to expose that part of the body
which can be uncomfortable for some subjects.

BENEFITS:

  • Create a virtual markers in Visual3D
  • Non-intrusive approach
  • Automated landmark creation
  • Faster model creation
  • Faster processing of disabled, injured or overweight sunjects
  • Visual3D supports custom pointers
  • Active marker setup available

VIRTUAL MARKERS / LANDMARKS

A digitizing landmark is identified relative to 3 markers attached to the segment
of interest.Computing the location relative to 3 tracking markers means that
the subject can move during the data capture. This can be especially useful because
you can move the subject and markers so that there is a better view of the markers
to the motion capture system.
